Macspeech Dictate Review

UPDATE- We now have a review of the new 1.5 update to MacSpeech Dictate available here. This update is a major advancement upon Dictate and we would dare say a requirement if you intend using Dictate at all in a law firm or any other setting for lawyers.

Here is a candid review by attorney Victor Medina of Macspeech’s new software Dictate. I finally had the chance to meet and speak with Victor at length in Dallas for the Macs at Trial seminar, which was fantastic. Victor is quite honest of his opinion of the program, even going so far as to point out a couple of problems with the software. Overall, he is quite impressed with Dictate and may have convinced us to purchase the software which seems to work well in a legal and medical setting.

Here is Victor’s review (of course we suggest you actually visit Victor’s blog as he has many other great articles for attorneys):

No pithy title. No lazy link love to another review. Just a straight up review of the software that most likely saved my career.

I have had a problem with my hands for quite some time. As a lawyer, I do a fair amount of typing, whether that’s for e-mail responses or in drafting letters and agreements. At the same time, I spent a number of years playing the piano recreationally. All of this has resulted in me having a dull pain in my hands whenever I type too much after a long day.

Before I switched to Macs, I ran a speech recognition software called Dragon Naturally Speaking. It was pretty good, but the law firm that I worked for got me the “legal” edition of the software, which I think was a few versions behind the really good software. After I switched to Macs, the only piece of software that was out there for speech recognition was iListen by MacSpeech. To be frank, it wasn’t very good. In fact, with all due respect to MacSpeech, it was terrible. So, for the last two years, I have been writing things out longhand, typing everything, and generally living with the dull pain that resulted.

As many people who are interested in speech recognition software know, MacSpeech announced that they were launching a new speech recognition software called Dictate. This was really important news because rather than relying on the old Phillips engine that powered iListen, MacSpeech had been able to license the engine that powered Dragon from Nuance, and that was what was going to be running the new Dictate software. They made this announcement at MacWorld, even winning a Best of Show award for Dictate. I was very excited and placed my order right away.

Then, I spent the next month and a half checking the status of my order two or three times a day. Finally, last night, I learned that my copy of Dictate was shipping out and would arrive today. I installed it right away and have been playing with it for the last three hours. As you might have guessed, I’ve been drafting this entire review using Dictate.

What can I say? It’s fabulous. I mean, I only did the basic training, and I’d be surprised if the software got one word wrong for every thousand that I’ve spoken. I’ve used it so much that my keyboard, which is attached via Bluetooth, has power down and lost connection with my Macbook. If it does miss a word, it is most likely because I’ve gotten lazy with my dictation not because it has misinterpreted the context or word I’ve spoken.

It takes contractions with ease, and laughs at my challenge to interpret capitalized words like iListen, iPhone, iPod, Dictate, Mac ad nauseam. It even does an excellent job of controlling my computer, such as opening and quitting applications, inserting text before and after other text, and switching between applications.

If I’m being fair with this review, and I’d like to think that I am, I should point out that the software has a couple of bugs. These have less to do with the speech recognition part of the software, and more to do with some of the internal functionality of the commands that you can use to make your speech recognition smoother. Specifically, it has a quirky little bug that copies text after an insertion point somewhere higher in the document and places it at the end of wherever you resume dictating. Not being a programmer, I have no idea why this happens. Also, as many other people have pointed out in their preview of Dictate, the program does not allow you to correct a word by selecting it and choosing from a number of options. Though the company has been very clear that it intends on adding that particular feature in a subsequent version.

Why is this important for you? Well, I’m not sure that it is. But, this is ridiculously important for me because it means I can now rest my hands for the better part of the working day. And, I honestly believe that this software has extended my career by at least a few years. Unfortunately, it also means that I have no excuse for being more productive during the day.

Of course, if you use the program long enough, you will be speaking your punctuation in everyday life. And, that’s going to get annoying for your family very very quickly.

I purchased Dictate last night, went home, loaded it, did the 5 minute tutorial, and started using it. It is truly amazing and well worth the money. There were minimal errors, perhaps one in in the first dication (a paul aunt for abhorrent). When I highlighted and repeated the word the program corrected it properly. It also recognized and capitalized proper names such as Johny Damon, Alex Rodriguez and even Hedeki Matsui. It did err on Derek Jeter and typed Derek Cheater. There were no problems opening programs such as iTunes, Microsoft Word or Safari. I previously purchased programs such as ViaVoice and iListen. I found both to be problematic and even annoying. So much so that that after a while I just stopped using them. With iListen I read many of the passages but it really did not help with the recognition. I read for 5 minutes last night and the dictation was near perfect. I look forward to the upcoming changes that will allow users to spell uncommon words and allow the program to “learn.” Congratulations MacSpeech! This is a winner.

The Apple Store lists System Requirements that include Intel Core Duo processor. I believe that my first generation MacBook Pro has the Intel processor, but not the “Core Duo”. Is anyone using Dictate on a similar, or older, machine?

  • Allan Zeldman

Bought MacSpeech today. Had a couple glitches until I got the prefs right, but after that it’s been smooth as silk; 99% accurate; and I’m on a MacBook Pro 1st gen, meaning Core Duo but not Core Duo 2. Your 1st gen (look under About This Mac) should say Core Duo, it just isn’t a Core Duo 2.

    So far, love the program.

I'm having the same problem as the fella below:
I have been unable to successfully install the software. I receive a message saying to install the English data disk, but the original install disk does not eject without quitting the program. As I have quit the program, when I installed English data disk, I receive a message saying no application found.
    Can someone help me?

This is a known issue and actually CAN be resolved by calling customer service. There was an issue with a certain batch of the installation CD's. Call customer service and describe your problem, they will mail you a new CD which corrects the problem.

Here is the MacSpeech article addressing the issue:

The speech recognition portion of the program works beautifully, but it weirds out constantly–refusing in ANY installation (I've removed, re-installed, and re-trained the program three times) to recognize the command “Go To End” in a document, and just typing out “go to and” at the cursor point. The mic refuses to change mode on command often, necessitating the creation of a new profile to restore function (i.e. changing to “Wake up” when it's asleep, or “command mode” when in dictation mode.) Customer service is good in quality, but VERY slow in replying! Every eMail to Mac Speech customer service takes several HOURS–someimes up to 24!!!! And on weekends, FORGET IT! You won't hear from them until Monday. Use the phone instead!!!! I give the program a B- overall, an A for speech recognition and a C- for function and tech support.

I am here to say that this is a great review. As a matter of fact, I am drafting this comment while talking into Mac Dictate. I have had the software for five minutes, and am drafting this comment after two years and with a lifesaver in my mouth (and I'm a Southerner to boot), and it has not made a mistake yet.

I'm glad Victor's review helped you. I had purchased and used the product myself and while writing a review ran across Victor's. It was so well written and in-line with my own experiences I decided to repost his.

Many thanks to all for the initial review and the many ensuing comments. MacSpeech has been released here in the UK more recently so I have been reading up on all the pros and cons.
Strange that opinions seem to reside at either end of the spectrum – wildly enthusiastic, extremely negative. Still undecided as to whether I should purchase. I wonder whether any of you would care to comment further after several months of use?

I just purchased an iMac and Dictate software. Overall, I'm pleased with its performance; however, like some of you, I'm experiencing a couple of things that I find to be a little disappointing. To name one, when generating an e-mail, for instance. Every time I come to the end of a sentence (perhaps a punctuation), a letter pops up at the end of the sentence. Here, let me give you an example: I find that very worth having. U

The “U” after the period shows up almost every time without me even saying it. Does anyone have any input on this? Is anyone else experiencing anything similar to this?

I had that problem when I tried to use their automatic correction to train a word. I restarted the program and stopped trying to train odd words using their system, and the added letters disappeared. Hopet his helps!

This is a great application with one HUGE problem.
It does not play nice with Skype and MacSpeech said they have no way to fix it.
If you are dictating, and then you switch to Skype to take a call, and then you switch back, the mic is dead. Skype still owns it. Chatting is fine. Voice or video…not so much.

I wish I could agree with this, I found MacSpeech dictate to be miles behind Dragon naturally speaking this is my single regret or switching from Windows to Mac absolutely pitiful. anybody's got any ideas of what I'm doing wrong, please let me know. amazingly I have seen that MacSpeech Dictate have just released an upgrade, this upgrade appears to be the same one that nuance gave to Is speaking years ago. given that MacSpeech Dictate is licensed from that company I feel that we've been robbed for every dollar, not happy with McIntosh at all on this one, what a pity you spoil the ship for a cents worth of tar.

i used Dragon and thought it was great, very little effort, and little or no stress

MacSpeech is the biggest waste of money, i will say somthing and it will put somthing else down, i hv even trained it a lot.

MacDictate medical is a much better deal than dragon medical on a more stable os. With the extra money, I will buy myself a new computer.
