JMDictate – iPhone Dictation

One of the most utilized gadgets by attorneys is a dictaphone. Hopefully, you’ve already made the leap from microcassettes to digital dictaphones, but if you haven’t you may have saved yourself a lot of money if you already have an iPhone or 2nd Gen iTouch. JOTOMI has released JMDictate, a professional dictation application for the iPhone and iTouch which offers all of the features a dictaphone has and more.

Unlike other voice recording apps already available, JMDictate allows you to rewind and record over any point in your recording, making it a true dictation application. It offers voice activation and management of recorded dictation.

Where JMDictate differs from a regular dictaphone is it’s ability to leverage the iPhone/iTouch connectivity to distribute dictations. JMDictate can send dictation as WAV files via email, download to your computer’s dictation software, to an FTP or WebDAV server or to a workflow system. All of these Internet-enabled sharing options use SSL/TLS encryption automatically to ensure the safety of your confidential client information within your dictation.

Thus you can now safely and securely dictate while on the move in your car or in vacation in the Bahamas and immediately transfer your dictation to your transcriptionist instead of having to wait for your dictaphone to make its way back to your computer for uploading. However, this does not mean you are safe from your spouse while dictating on vacation.

JMDictate comes in a free version which allows you to use the app fully with a limitation of 30 seconds per dictation with a limit of 5 files. The full version has a 90 minute limitation on any given dictation with only your device’s memory to limit the number of files.

TechnoEsq’s virtual paralegals are already using this application in dictating medical record summaries and demand letters for our clients. They have already remarked on it’s ease of use and higher efficiency in transmitting the dictation to their transcriptionists.

Forgive me for asking - as i am not Iphone savvy....I am looking into this for my boss. If he downloads teh JMDictate on his Iphone to use what else are we looking for that might be needed on my computer for me to type up his information? This woudl be a great opportunity for him to get more things done if I coudl type up his documents so that he can get to other pressing issues. Thank you Please email me back with the information.
  • Finis, what software does the transcriptionist use to start, stop and rewind. Hopefully not quicktime, that would be cumbersome, wouldn't it.

p.s. I think the gray and black scheme is hard to read. I must be getting old.
  • Hans,

As for the scheme - It's not meant to be that way. The new version of Safari is rendering my page funny. I'm working on figuring out why. If you open it in Firefox it should look right.

The transcription software is by Olympus... using Quicktime WOULD be very cumbersome. The best and most affordable I've found is the Olympus USB foot pedal (look up the AS-2400) and the software that comes with it (transcription software for the pedal). It's only ~$150 and is well worth it. You can get it in both PC and Mac versions here: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=147588-DT&cat=CON
  • Nope, I'm in FireFox. Blue, black and gray, dude. We already have transcription pedals, think they'll work with the software or do you need special pedals?

  • It should be fixed now Hans. I fixed it a few days ago. Let me know if you are still having issues.
  • to the webmater:
    1. something is wrong with your site. I'm using IE7 and keep getting error messages and having to reload pages.
    2. take a look at www.bill4time.com - you might like it. Web based practice management, time billing, etc + many add-ons including a desktop widget and iPhone app. fully Windows/IE/Firefox/Safari compatible.
  • This is also handy for me. As a reporter, I often dictate stories in the car on the way back to the station. It also helps to have a good recorder handy in case I don't have my equipment and a story breaks. I wasn't too satisfied with other iPhone recorders.
  • Thanks Gabe, I hadn't thought of the other professions which would use it as much if not more. I would imagine doctors as well.
